Jihad Abdul Sabur
MEET OUR MEMBERS
Jihad Abdul Sabur was born and raised in Bronx, NY. She grew up in a Muslim household where it
is forbidden to draw nature and/or people. Islamically it is because after one dies, Allah would ask the person
to bring the being to life which one would fail, and then the person would be taken to hell. Instead, Jihad did
a lot of textiles and abstract art growing up. It wasn’t until she was in high school and had to draw scenes in
a book for her school project. After seeing how amazing the scene looked, she began to take her artwork
seriously. One person that also inspired Jihad to pursue her dream as an artist is her high school art teacher
Siti. She always helped her developed her ideas on paper creatively and seeing how he inspires other students
like Jihad; inspired her to give that same inspiration. When it comes to her art, she always loves to promote
beauty in the female figure, especially when it comes to African American women. She chooses African American
women and women of color.
